2012 Australian Spring Racing Carnival – Natural Day Look

The last week of October, and the start of November, was a very busy filming time for my partner and me. The second of the back-to-back (or our most recent shoot) filming shoots was the Spring Racing Carnival shoot. It gave HTC a great learning experience, some time to get to know other models and MUAs in the Perth area and my partner the first chance to try his hand at filming.

Our guest makeup artist, Melissa from Lissa Jaye Make Up Artistry, created two makeup looks all for the horse races that are currently happening and are about to happen. This look is the first of the two looks – being the daytime look simply dubbed 2012 Australian Spring Racing Carnival – Natural Day Look.

As mentioned earlier, both of the Spring Racing Carnival videos were probably the most information filled of the HTC set of videos. We went through a lot of tips ~ any that didn’t make the final edit will be discussed here (whether it be for editing, continuity or clarity of the material when on film on the day of the shoot).

This looks was created for someone with a basic level of makeup skill. Our model was Lauren (who was also part of the Aztec Summer Festival shoot) was first primed and prepped with a makeup that would last for the day and then later could be modified (as shown by Melissa) for a bold evening look. Having a look like this is great not just for racing events but also any other outdoor event where you need to have a certain level of dress standards (semi-formal/smart casual etc.)

Melissa’s Tips:

Racing is about a refined and classic look – nightclub makeup can stay home. The key elements of this look are natural and subtle. Melissa accurately says in the video, “There is a time and a place for the different styles of makeup.”

  • Melissa stresses before you apply makeup that you apply moisturizer. However – whilst you have a product (or even a BB cream) with an SPF layering it with other SPF products does not give you multiple covers. For example 15SPF + 15SPF does not give you automatic 30SPF coverage. If you have an SPF on other products, you do not pick a foundation that has one.
  • Always make sure the primer is fully dry before applying products. As Melissa used silicon based product it does not mix well wet with foundation.
  • Melissa has a personal preference for artificial brushes – those with a natural bristle hold product (which you won’t get on your face) and is harder to clean. If you want to use your fingers for a natural effect you can – but again it is personal preference.
  • Start foundation and primer from one cheek to the chin to the other cheek then the forehead.
  • Not everyone needs to conceal – only do it if it’s necessary.
  • Racing (particularly in hotter climates like Australia) makeup should look more natural – especially if you are drinking and outside in the sun all day.
  • To avoid the gradient effect with foundation and your body, always blend it in your neck. If you have a face darker than your body’s skin tone – you need to select a darker or lighter foundation.
  • Although you have a primer, some people naturally get patchy foundation (highly recommended for oily complexions) it is recommended they get a setting powder or finishing powder. Can use loose or pressed powders depending on your preference.
  • Over-powdering can create a dry look to the skin.
  • Eyelid primer is necessary if you have primed your face – it is about the full look.
  • Having too thin an eyebrow can age you.
  • For the natural look, eye shadow can be semi-matte or matter although you can have a eye shadow with some shine if you want. If you have too much shine in your product (such as a dress) then you need to tone it down, however if you have minimal shine (such as shiny shoes) then the eye shadow could be effective.
  • Don’t touch your face if it is itchy– pat instead of scratch.
  • Melissa prefers a smaller handled mascara wand – but does not recommend you take this to the races, as it can look too clumpy if you touch it up.
  • To soften your blush use a highlighting brush or a stifling brush.

For those who are reading this blog as a reference for all the parties involved I hope the following helps (HTC will not lie or mislead future clients/employers):

Lauren: (FYI: This reference just talks about the festival shoot if you want to know about Lauren in our Aztec Summer Festival shoot you will need to link here when it is active/written up and released).

Lauren is very punctual for shoots and was able to provide some variety for shooting out looks. Lauren also works well when shooting with other people and despite her relevant new status to the modeling scene in Perth I feel she has potential to become a fluid poser when she relaxes on a scene and doesn’t think too hard about it – as modeling is also about having fun.

For MUAS – she has very long noticeable hair that could be of benefit to those shooting portfolio looks.  However, she would benefit from something that involves movement rather than just sitting or standing in the one position taking pictures – hence why she is obviously an actress…(duh me).

Normally in shoots we allow models to talk a little, but due to time constraints we needed to get to the core of the material leaving little model interaction time – however in the future, if Lauren is filming with us again I think her talent as a moving performer will shine through.

Lissa Jaye Make Up Artistry:

Melissa is a freelance makeup artist with experience working with some well-known cosmetic companies. When you work with her, you instantly know you are working with someone who knows their stuff and has great attention to all details pertaining the shoot.

When you engage with Melissa, she has a very professional and coherent manner of communication. She is able to answer questions behind the ‘why’ one would do something in regards to makeup and created two very good and dynamic looks which HTC hopes people will be willing to try out in the future.

We hope in the future, Melissa will be releasing the blog article with the products she used for the shoot – if not you have her website (listed below) which you can directly contact her with your questions.

Both Melissa and Lauren are available for work in the Western Australian area (see below for contact details or further reference questions – serious inquiries only – anything of a sexual/offensive nature will not be answered).

When the films are released (everything good comes in due time) HTC welcomes you to click, rate, subscribe, comment and pass onto your friends – without viewer interaction there will be no further tutorials. We stress on interacting with us!

HTC hopes Melissa and Lauren brought you to this blog and that you would enjoy their services as much as HTC did. Any negative comments on a personal, sexual, unprofessional or discriminatory nature will be removed from the comments or not forwarded onto the Lauren or Melissa.

As your mother says ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say keep it to yourself’. However, critical feedback IS welcome.
